# Adding a User Role

Users are added to Roles that perform certain functions. Roles are either Subscribers or Viewers. A Subscriber can make changes to the scaffolds. A Viewer can access ScaffoldIQ but can only view the requests, scaffolds, etc. and cannot make any changes other than adding comments.

> [!NOTE]
> User roles must be created before you can add new People, as they need to be assigned to a role. This includes Viewer Roles.

Subscriber users are assigned to Subscriber Roles, and Viewer users are assigned to Viewer Roles.

To create a new role

3. In the **User Roles** screen, click **Add** and specify to add a **Subscriber** or **Viewer** role.

6. On the right, specify the user's permissions and what they can do in the system.
7.
